Why is it that everyone always
remembers moving experiences better then other, more eventful occasions
in their lives? It's really because moving involves taking nearly every
personal possession and transplanting those precious things someplace
else. Somewhere new and unfamiliar. The concept of having a home,
whether it be a house, town home, condominium, a trailer or an
apartment, they all represent the same thing. More than a roof over
your head, it's where you call home. It is your personal sanctuary and
your personal effects make it a home that is yours. According to
Abraham Maslow's theory of human needs, the only concepts more
important than shelter and personal safety were satisfying basic
survival needs such as having food and water.
As If you're planning a move across town
or across the country, any move is an important one. Whether or not
you're a believer in Feng Shui (the practice of arranging and
maintaining furnishings and your personal environment to produce
spiritual harmony) or not, it's still very important that you don't
take moving for granted. Being organized is key. Organizing the move
properly will prevent months of headache looking for things, trying to
account for lost items, or worse, accounting for unopened boxes from
the move or other personal effects if you have the unfortunate
experience of a theft or fire.
The short list common among all
successful movers includes plenty of moving boxes, packing materials,
good tape and permanent markers. Number and/or name every box, and
maintain a list of each box and it's contents. You'll thank yourself
time and time again that you took the short amount of time to do this.
Home Moving Tips
-
Don't mix boxes that would include
items from separate areas of the house. A wasted half-box is easier
to deal with than dragging random boxes around your new house to put
items away one-by-one. If you don't unpack that box right away,
chances are you never will completely empty and retire that box that
contains random things from all over your previous residence.
-
Plan every step of the move ahead of
time. Be sure to know in advance how much help you will have and how
much time you will have to pack and unpack. If you have the luxury,
plan having more time than you actually need. This way you can get as
settled as possible before having to depart for work and begin your
busy lifestyle from a new home base. If you get stuck trying to
unpack a little each day after work you will increase the stress and
frustration of the move dramatically.
-
Pack as much as you can ahead of
time. Supplies that are not used every week are a good starting
point. The same goes for large cooking pots and utensils. Keep your
luggage and bags free for your daily need items during the move and
reserve room for your valuables.
-
It's generally recommended that
whether you move yourself with friends or hire a moving company that
you keep your precious valuables in your possession. This includes
cash, jewelry, precious documents, bank and credit card records and
small heirlooms.
-
Your move can be successful and
rewarding if you take the time to plan your move carefully. It can be
your opportunity to lose things or it can become your opportunity to
finally organize your stuff and start over like brand new. Whether
you like Feng Shui or Chop Suey or none of the above, getting into
your new place and making it as comfortable and welcoming as possible
will save you countless moments of stress. The reward is yours for
the taking.
